THE ORIGIN AND SYMBOLISM OF THE WELSH LOVE SPOON

The custom of giving Lovespoons originated in Wales probably as early as the sixteenth century. The Lovespoon seems to have developed from the "cawl\" (Welsh broth or soup) spoon. Traditionally, young men would fashion intricately carved wooden spoons and present them to a young girl, hopefully to influence a relationship. Hence the word "spooning".
Love spoons are carved in a variety of shapes and sizes and generally have a symbolic meaning.

Here are a few symbols and their meanings:-

HEART - Love and affection
FLOWER - Gentleness and growth
DIAMOND SHAPE - A wish for good fortune
VINE/LEAVES - Long and fruitful life
SHIELD - Safekeeping/Protection
CELTIC CROSS - Faith and also a Welsh symbol
BIRDS - Lovebirds or Doves of peace
DRAGON - Welsh National Emblem also strength
CAPTIVE SPHERES - Number of children desired

Today, Love spoons are given for all occasions, Births, Christenings, Engagements, Weddings, Anniversarie, or simply as a gift of love and affection. They are also make a wonderful gift from Wales.
